What is Chronological Age?

Chronological age is the straightforward measure of how much time has passed since your birth — counted in years, months, and days. It's the age on your passport, your ID, your doctor's chart. Simple, objective, and universal.

But chronological age is just one lens. People talk about biological age (how old your body actually performs), Korean age (a different counting system), and adjusted age (used for premature infants). Each measures something slightly different.

How to Calculate Chronological Age (Step by Step)

Our age calculator does this for you, but the method is simple enough to check by hand. You subtract the birth date from the date you want, working from days to months to years.

  1. Days: Subtract the birth day from the current day. If the birth day is larger, borrow one month and add its days to the current day.
  2. Months: Subtract the birth month from the current month (minus 1 if you borrowed). If the birth month is larger, borrow 1 year and add 12 months.
  3. Years: Subtract the birth year from the current year (minus 1 if you borrowed).

Worked example: born 15 August 2010, age on 7 October 2026.

  • Days: 7 is smaller than 15, so borrow September (30 days): 37 − 15 = 22 days
  • Months: 10 − 1 (borrowed) − 8 = 1 month
  • Years: 2026 − 2010 = 16 years

Result: 16 years, 1 month, 22 days, or 193 months in total.

Calendar Month vs. 30-Day Method: Why Calculators Can Differ by a Few Days

Not every age calculator borrows the same number of days. There are two common methods:

MethodWhat it borrowsUsed by
Calendar monthThe real length of the previous month (28, 29, 30 or 31 days)Most online age calculators
Fixed 30-dayAlways 30 days, whatever the monthMany paper forms and some test manuals

Example: born 20 January 2015, age on 5 March 2026.

  • Calendar method (February 2026 has 28 days): 5 + 28 − 20 = 11 years, 1 month, 13 days
  • 30-day method: 5 + 30 − 20 = 11 years, 1 month, 15 days

The 2-day gap only appears when you borrow a month that is not 30 days long. ZingCalc uses the calendar-month method. If you need an age for an official test or form, use the method that test or form asks for.

Types of Age Explained

  • ▸Chronological Age: The number of complete years, months, and days since your date of birth. This is what most of the world uses.
  • ▸Biological Age: How old your body is based on physical health markers — fitness, diet, sleep, and genetics. A 50-year-old who runs marathons might have a biological age of 38.
  • ▸Korean Age: In South Korea, everyone is 1 year old at birth, and gains a year every January 1st rather than on their birthday. You're typically 1–2 years older in Korean age.
  • ▸Adjusted Age: Used for premature babies. Subtracts the weeks of prematurity from chronological age to get a more accurate developmental baseline.

Chronological Age for Testing and Assessments

Speech therapists, psychologists, teachers and doctors use chronological age to compare a child's scores with others of the same age. That is why many assessments ask for a test date, not today's date.

  • Enter the child's birth date, then set "Calculate At Date" to the day of testing.
  • Write the result as years;months (for example 7;4 means 7 years, 4 months). Many norm tables use this format.
  • Some test manuals round the remaining days to the nearest month and others drop them. Always follow the rule in your test manual.
  • For babies born before 37 weeks, many clinicians use adjusted age (see above) until about age 2.

Special Cases: Leap Years and Month-End Birthdays

  • Born on 29 February: in non-leap years, you still gain a year of age. Whether your birthday is counted on 28 February or 1 March depends on the country and the purpose, so check local rules for legal documents.
  • Born on the 31st: months like April or June have no 31st. Most calendar-based calculators count the month as complete on the last day of the shorter month.
  • Leap days in total-day counts: a person who is exactly 20 years old has lived 7,305 days if 5 leap days fell in that period, not 7,300.

Age Milestones in Days, Weeks and Seconds

Your age can also be counted in days, weeks or even seconds. Here is roughly when some fun milestones arrive:

MilestoneYou reach it at about
1,000,000 minutes1 year, 11 months
1,000 weeks19 years, 2 months
10,000 days27 years, 5 months
1,000,000,000 seconds31 years, 8 months
500 months41 years, 8 months
20,000 days54 years, 9 months

Milestone ages are rounded to the nearest month and assume an average year of 365.25 days.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is Korean age different from my regular age?

Korean age starts at 1 at birth and increases by 1 every January 1st — not on your actual birthday. Someone born in December 2000 would be 2 in Korean age by January 1st, 2001, even though they're only a few weeks old chronologically.

What does biological age mean?

Biological age reflects how well your body is functioning compared to average people your chronological age. It's shaped by exercise, diet, sleep quality, stress levels, and genetics — not just the calendar.

When is adjusted age used?

Adjusted (or corrected) age is used for premature babies. It subtracts the weeks of prematurity from chronological age to set realistic developmental expectations — since a 3-month-old born 8 weeks early is developmentally closer to 1.5 months.

Can I calculate my age on a specific past date?

Yes. Change the "Calculate At Date" field to any date in the past or future. The calculator will show your age as of that specific date — useful for legal documents, anniversaries, or historical research.

How do I calculate my age from my date of birth?

Subtract your birth date from today's date: first the days, then the months, then the years, borrowing a month or a year when needed. Or enter your birth date in the age calculator above for an instant result.

How do I find my age in months?

Multiply your full years by 12 and add the extra months. For example, 7 years and 4 months is 7 × 12 + 4 = 88 months.

Why do two age calculators give me slightly different answers?

They may borrow days differently. Some use the real length of each month and others always use 30 days. The difference is never more than 2 days.

Is chronological age the same as my legal age?

In most countries, yes. Your legal age is the number of full years since your date of birth, which is your chronological age in years.
