What is Chronological Age?

Chronological age is the straightforward measure of how much time has passed since your birth — counted in years, months, and days. It's the age on your passport, your ID, your doctor's chart. Simple, objective, and universal.

But chronological age is just one lens. People talk about biological age (how old your body actually performs), Korean age (a different counting system), and adjusted age (used for premature infants). Each measures something slightly different.

Types of Age Explained

  • Chronological Age: The number of complete years, months, and days since your date of birth. This is what most of the world uses.
  • Biological Age: How old your body is based on physical health markers — fitness, diet, sleep, and genetics. A 50-year-old who runs marathons might have a biological age of 38.
  • Korean Age: In South Korea, everyone is 1 year old at birth, and gains a year every January 1st rather than on their birthday. You're typically 1–2 years older in Korean age.
  • Adjusted Age: Used for premature babies. Subtracts the weeks of prematurity from chronological age to get a more accurate developmental baseline.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is Korean age different from my regular age?

Korean age starts at 1 at birth and increases by 1 every January 1st — not on your actual birthday. Someone born in December 2000 would be 2 in Korean age by January 1st, 2001, even though they're only a few weeks old chronologically.

What does biological age mean?

Biological age reflects how well your body is functioning compared to average people your chronological age. It's shaped by exercise, diet, sleep quality, stress levels, and genetics — not just the calendar.

When is adjusted age used?

Adjusted (or corrected) age is used for premature babies. It subtracts the weeks of prematurity from chronological age to set realistic developmental expectations — since a 3-month-old born 8 weeks early is developmentally closer to 1.5 months.

Can I calculate my age on a specific past date?

Yes. Change the "Calculate At Date" field to any date in the past or future. The calculator will show your age as of that specific date — useful for legal documents, anniversaries, or historical research.
