The Digital Profit Formula

Digital Net Profit = Price − (Platform Fee + Payment Gateway Fee)

Because there's no base product cost or shipping, the entire fee structure comes down to two line items: the marketplace's own cut, and — on platforms where it's separate — the payment gateway's processing fee.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why are digital product profit margins higher than physical products?

Digital products have no base manufacturing cost, no shipping, and no supplier — the only real costs are platform fees and whatever you spent upfront to create the asset. That means net margins of 70-90% per sale are common for digital downloads once the upfront design cost is recouped, versus 20-40% for typical physical POD products.

How do listing renewal fees work for digital downloads?

On Etsy, digital listings renew the same way physical listings do — a $0.20 fee is charged when the listing sells out (though digital items are usually set to unlimited quantity) or every four months if it hasn't sold. Gumroad and Shopify don't charge a separate listing or renewal fee.

Is Gumroad cheaper than Etsy for digital products?

Gumroad charges 10% + $0.50 per sale on direct/profile sales (a separate 30% flat fee applies only to sales through its Discover marketplace), which is often still cheaper than Etsy's combined listing + 6.5% transaction + ~3% payment processing fees on lower-priced items — but Etsy provides organic marketplace search traffic that Gumroad doesn't, so the fee difference has to be weighed against expected traffic and conversion rate.
