The Digital Profit Formula

Digital Net Profit = Price โˆ’ (Platform Fee + Payment Gateway Fee)

Because there's no base product cost or shipping, the entire fee structure comes down to two line items: the marketplace's own cut, and โ€” on platforms where it's separate โ€” the payment gateway's processing fee.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why are digital product profit margins higher than physical products?

Digital products have no base manufacturing cost, no shipping, and no supplier โ€” the only real costs are platform fees and whatever you spent upfront to create the asset. That means net margins of 70-90% per sale are common for digital downloads once the upfront design cost is recouped, versus 20-40% for typical physical POD products.

How do listing renewal fees work for digital downloads?

On Etsy, digital listings renew the same way physical listings do โ€” a $0.20 fee is charged when the listing sells out (though digital items are usually set to unlimited quantity) or every four months if it hasn't sold. Gumroad and Shopify don't charge a separate listing or renewal fee.

Is Gumroad cheaper than Etsy for digital products?

Gumroad charges 10% + $0.50 per sale on direct/profile sales (a separate 30% flat fee applies only to sales through its Discover marketplace), which is often still cheaper than Etsy's combined listing + 6.5% transaction + ~3% payment processing fees on lower-priced items โ€” but Etsy provides organic marketplace search traffic that Gumroad doesn't, so the fee difference has to be weighed against expected traffic and conversion rate.

Do I have to handle sales tax or VAT on digital downloads?

It depends on the platform. Etsy collects and remits sales tax and VAT on digital items in many regions, and Gumroad acts as merchant of record. On your own Shopify store it's usually your responsibility. Check the tax pages of your platform, because the rules vary by buyer location.

How many extra sales do I need to cover ad spend?

Divide your monthly ad spend by your profit per sale. With a $60/month ad budget and $10.41 profit per sale, you need 5.8, so 6 extra sales a month, just to cover the ads. The calculator's "ad cost allocated per sale" field shows this automatically.

Are Etsy Offsite Ads charged on digital products?

Yes. The same Offsite Ads rules apply to digital and physical listings: 15% per attributed order, or 12% for shops with over $10,000 in yearly sales.

Worked Example: A $12 Canva Template on Etsy vs Gumroad

  • โ€ข Etsy: 6.5% transaction ($0.78) + 3% + $0.25 processing ($0.61) + $0.20 listing = $1.59 in fees. Profit: $10.41 (86.8%). These are the calculator's default numbers.
  • โ€ข Gumroad (10% + $0.50 per sale, as in the table above): $1.70 in fees. Profit: $10.30 (85.8%). Sales through Gumroad's Discover marketplace are charged 30% instead.
  • โ€ข Shopify Basic (2.9% + $0.30 processing): $0.65 per sale. Profit: $11.35 per sale, but you pay the monthly plan and bring your own traffic.
  • โ€ข Payback on a $150 design cost at the Etsy numbers: $150 รท $10.41 = 14.4, so 15 sales.

If an Etsy sale comes through Offsite Ads, add the 15% fee ($1.80). Profit drops to $8.61, a 71.8% margin. That's still good, but include it in your planning.

Why $3 Downloads Hurt: Fixed Fees at Low Prices

Fixed fees don't shrink when your price does. A $3 printable on Etsy pays $0.20 + $0.25 + 9.5% of $3 = $0.74 in fees, leaving $2.27 (75.5%). On Gumroad, $3 pays $0.80 and leaves $2.20 (73.3%). Bundling five $3 printables into one $12 pack raises your margin from about 75% to about 87%.
